The Google Business Profile setup that gets painting contractors into the map pack
Categories, service lists, before and after photos, hours, posts and Q and A, set up the way Google actually ranks painting companies in a local search.
Most painting contractors claimed their Google listing once, typed in a phone number, uploaded four photos from 2021, and never opened it again. Then they wonder why the map pack shows three other companies. The profile is not a directory entry. It is the ranking asset for local search, and in painting it is unusually easy to beat the field because so much of the field left the fields blank.
Across 88,392 painting listings, 39.4% show no hours at all and 27.1% link no website. Those are free wins.
Categories: primary is the one that matters
Set your primary category to Painter. Not general contractor, not construction company, not handyman. Google weights the primary category heavily for map pack ranking, and a painting company filed as a general contractor competes in a category it will never win while missing the one it could.
Add secondary categories only for work you genuinely do and want more of:
- Painting (as a secondary, if available in your market)
- Cabinet maker or cabinet refinishing, if you refinish kitchens
- Deck builder or wood staining, if you stain decks and fences
- Drywall contractor, if you do repair before paint
- Commercial cleaning or pressure washing, if you offer prep washing
Do not add ten. Every irrelevant secondary category dilutes the signal and pulls you into searches you cannot close.
Services: list every job type separately with a price
The Services section is a set of free text entries, and almost nobody fills it out properly. Google reads it, and increasingly the AI answer engines do too.
Build one entry per job type, each with a two-sentence description and a starting price:
- Interior painting, from $2.50 per square foot
- Exterior house painting, from $3,200
- Kitchen cabinet refinishing, from $3,800
- Deck and fence staining, from $900
- Popcorn ceiling removal and repaint, from $1,400
- Drywall repair and texture matching, from $350
- Commercial and office repaints, quoted per project
Listing a starting price does two things. It filters out the homeowner shopping for a $900 exterior, and it feeds the AI engines that now answer "how much does it cost to paint a kitchen in [city]" using whatever numbers they can find.
Photos: before and after, shot from the same spot
97% of painting listings have at least one photo, so having photos is not an advantage. Having the right ones is.
The rule for every job: one photo from the doorway or the same corner of the yard before anything is taped, one from the exact same position after cleanup. Same time of day if you can manage it. That pair is worth more than a hundred glamour shots because it shows the change, and the change is what the homeowner is buying.
Upload eight to twelve pairs, and then add two to four new photos every month. Google's own guidance is explicit that fresh photos correlate with engagement. Include a photo of the actual crew and the actual truck; homeowners hiring a painter are letting strangers into the house for a week, and faces reduce that anxiety more than a stock roller shot.
Hours, service area and the fields nobody fills
Fill in real hours. If you answer the phone until 6 p.m., say 6 p.m. Saturday matters more in painting than in most trades because Saturday morning is when a homeowner walks the house and decides it needs doing, and only 34.1% of painting companies show Saturday hours.
If you work from home or a shop that customers never visit, hide the address and set a service area of the cities you actually serve. Listing 40 cities does not rank you in 40 cities; it weakens all of them. Pick the eight to twelve you would drive to today.
Fill in the opening date, the "from the business" attributes, and an email if you are willing to take estimate requests that way. 20.5% of painting listings show an email address, so it is a small differentiator that costs nothing.
Posts and Q and A
Posts expire after a week, so treat them as a weekly habit rather than a project. One post a week, 60 words, one photo: a finished job, a color of the month, a seasonal note about booking exterior work before the weather turns. It signals activity, and it gives you a place to put the current offer.
Q and A is the most overlooked feature on the whole profile. You are allowed to ask and answer your own questions. Seed six:
- Do you paint kitchen cabinets? Yes, spray finished, four to six days, from $3,800.
- How long does an exterior repaint take? Three to five days for a typical two-story.
- Do you provide color consultation? Yes, a free 45-minute consult with every accepted estimate.
- Are you licensed and insured? Yes, license number and carrier listed.
- Do you paint occupied homes? Yes, one room at a time with daily cleanup.
- How far out are you booking? Usually two to four weeks in season.
Those answers show in search results and get read by the AI engines covered in the AI search guide.
Keep it from going stale
Set a 20-minute calendar block on the first Monday of every month: upload the month's before and after pairs, publish four posts, answer any new questions, and check that hours are right for the season. That is the entire maintenance job, and it is more than 27.1% of your competitors will ever do.
Frequently asked
Will adding more categories rank me for more searches? No, and it usually hurts. Google reads a scattered category list as an unfocused business. One primary plus two or three honest secondaries is right.
Should I set my service area to the whole metro? Only if you will actually drive it. A tight service area concentrates your ranking signal where your crews are, and a homeowner 45 minutes out who calls is a job you will regret bidding.
Does the website link matter if I have no website? It matters enough that it is worth fixing. Painting contractors with a linked site show a median of 18 reviews against 3 for those without. The website guide covers the five pages you need.
