Painting Contractor Growth

Facebook and Instagram ads for painting contractors that actually book estimates

By Steve Meitler · 2026-07-21 · 5 min read

The before and after creative that works, offers homeowners respond to, daily budgets, audience setup, retargeting, and what a painting lead costs on Meta.

Nobody wakes up on Instagram intending to hire a painter. That is exactly why Meta works for painting and does not work for emergency trades. Painting is a want, not an emergency, and wants are created by showing somebody a kitchen that looks better than theirs.

The trade has the single best creative asset in home services and most contractors waste it: the before and after pair. Everything below is built around it.

Creative: the transformation, in three formats

Format one, the side by side still. One image, before on the left, after on the right, shot from the same position. No text overlay covering the image, no logo bigger than a thumbnail. This is the workhorse and it costs nothing to make.

Format two, the 15 to 25 second walkthrough. Phone held vertical, walking through the finished room while the owner talks: "This kitchen was oak cabinets and a beige wall three weeks ago. Sprayed the cabinets in a soft white, two coats on the walls, four days on site." Shaky is fine. Polished video underperforms in this trade because it reads as an ad.

Format three, the reveal. A three second clip of the tape and plastic coming down. It is the most watched thing a painting company can post and it takes one person ten seconds to film.

Refresh creative every three to four weeks. Painting audiences in a single metro are small, frequency climbs fast, and the same before and after seen nine times stops working.

Offers that get a response

An ad that says "call for a free estimate" gets ignored, because everyone gives free estimates. Give the homeowner a smaller yes:

  • "Free 45-minute color consultation, no obligation" (strong for interior, and it presells your process)
  • "Cabinet refinishing quote in 24 hours, includes a mockup of your kitchen in three colors"
  • "Book your exterior before October 15 and we hold this season's pricing"
  • "Two rooms painted, walls and trim, from $1,450, this month only"

The color consultation offer is the best performer for interior work because it converts a purchase decision into an appointment about paint colors, which homeowners enjoy. It also gets you in the house, and in the house is where painting jobs close.

Budgets and structure

Start at $20 to $40 a day. Below $15 a day Meta cannot exit the learning phase in a reasonable window; above $60 a day in a single suburb you will saturate the audience in a month.

Two campaigns is enough:

  • Cold prospecting, $20 to $30 a day, one ad set, three to five creatives.
  • Retargeting, $5 to $10 a day, described below.

Use a lead form if your follow-up is fast, and the website if it is not. Lead forms produce two to three times the volume at half the intent, which is fine only if somebody calls within five minutes. If nobody can, send traffic to the estimate page instead. The economics of that trade-off are in the follow-up guide.

Audience setup

Meta removed most homeowner and income targeting, so stop trying to rebuild it. What works now:

  • Geography. A radius of eight to fifteen miles around your shop, or a list of the zip codes with the housing stock you want. Older neighborhoods with wood siding and 1990s kitchens are your market; a subdivision built in 2022 is not.
  • Age 35 to 65. Below 35 is mostly renters.
  • Broad targeting with no interests. Give Meta the geography and the creative and let it find people. Interest stacking underperforms broad in small local audiences now.
  • A lookalike from your customer list, if you have 300 or more past customers to upload. This is worth doing the day you hit 300.

Retargeting is where the cheap leads are

Painting decisions take one to three weeks and involve two people in the household. A homeowner who watched 50% of your kitchen video and never called is worth chasing for a month.

Build three audiences and run one ad set against all of them at $5 to $10 a day:

  • Website visitors, 30 days
  • Video viewers at 50%, 60 days
  • Instagram and Facebook profile engagers, 90 days

The retargeting ad should be different from the cold ad. Use proof, not the transformation: three review screenshots on a plain background, or a 20-second clip of a customer at their walkthrough saying what the crew was like.

Expect cold leads at $18 to $55 and retargeting leads at $8 to $25 in most markets.

Organic posting still matters, but not the way people think

Posting three finished jobs a week does not generate leads directly. It does something else: every homeowner who gets your estimate looks up your Instagram before they sign. An account with 40 recent jobs closes better than an account whose last post was in March. Treat it as a sales asset, not a lead source, and post the same before and after pairs you are already shooting for your Google profile.

Reading the numbers

Check three things weekly. Cost per lead by creative, not by campaign. Frequency, which should stay under 3.0 in a 7-day window. And leads that actually turned into a set estimate appointment, which you will only know if you tag the source in your CRM. A campaign at $22 a lead where nothing books is worse than one at $45 a lead that fills a Saturday.

Frequently asked

Do boosted posts work? For proof and awareness, sometimes. For leads, no. A boosted post cannot use a lead form, a proper audience, or a retargeting exclusion, and it optimizes for engagement rather than a phone call.

Should I run Meta or Google first? Google, if people in your market are already searching and you can afford $1,500 a month. Meta, if your average job is high, your photos are strong, or you want to sell cabinet work and color consultations to people who were not searching. Compare against the Google Ads guide.

How many photos do I need to start? Six before and after pairs. If you do not have them, shoot the next six jobs and start in three weeks. Do not launch with stock images; homeowners can tell, and it is the fastest way to look like a lead reseller.
