The next 30 days: the homeowners who want rooms painted before family arrives
From late October to Thanksgiving, homeowners want living rooms, guest rooms and entryways painted before guests arrive. Here is the 30-day plan to book them.
Exterior season is ending in most of the country, and the phone gets quieter right when you would like it busier. But there is a group of homeowners who are thinking about paint right now. They have family coming for Thanksgiving or the holidays, and they just looked at the living room and saw every scuff.
They want it done before a date. That makes them easier to book than almost anyone else you will talk to this winter. Here is how to reach them in the next 30 days.
Who is looking right now
These are not big repaint jobs. They are usually one to three rooms:
- The living room and entry, because that is what guests see first.
- The guest bedroom that has been a storage room since spring.
- The dining room, especially if they are hosting.
- Trim, doors and the stairway, which take a beating and look worse in holiday photos.
The common thread is a deadline. A homeowner who calls you on October 25 for a room that must be done by November 20 is not shopping for three months. They are picking whoever can commit to a date.
Week 1: Tell people you have dates
The single most useful thing you can say this week is "we have openings before Thanksgiving." Say it everywhere.
- Post it on your Google Business Profile. A short post with a photo of a finished interior and the line "Booking interior rooms before the holidays. Openings the weeks of November 3 and 10." Use your own photos.
- Update your services list. Make sure interior painting, trim and door painting and cabinet painting are listed as separate services. The Google Business Profile guide covers how to set these up.
- Text your past interior customers. Anyone who hired you for an exterior this year or an interior in past years. Keep it to two sentences: "Hi Linda, it is Mike from Ridgeline Painting. We are booking a few interior rooms before the holidays if there is anything you want freshened up before family comes."
Week 2: Make the quote fast
Deadline customers do not wait a week for an estimate. If you take five days to get them a number, they call someone else.
- Offer a photo quote for one or two rooms. Ask for a picture of each wall, the ceiling height and whether trim is included. You can give a range the same day and confirm on arrival.
- Give a range by room, not just by job. "Most bedrooms land between $450 and $900 depending on size and trim" helps people decide quickly. The pricing and quoting guide covers how to present prices with good, better and best options.
- Hold a date with a deposit. A small deposit turns "maybe" into a booked slot.
Week 3: Fill the gaps
By early November you will know which days are open. Fill them on purpose.
- Offer the open days specifically. "We have Tuesday and Wednesday the week of the 10th open" books faster than "we have some availability."
- Bundle small add-ons. Someone getting the living room done may add the hallway or the front door. Ask at the walkthrough.
- Ask every finished job for a review the same day. A clean room the week before a holiday is when people are happiest with you.
Week 4: Line up January
The holiday rush ends fast. The homeowner whose living room you painted in November probably has a bedroom, a kitchen or cabinets they did not get to.
Before you leave each job, say: "If you want the rest of the house done in January, that is usually our quietest month and the easiest to schedule." Write their name down. Text them the first week of January.
This is how November work turns into January work. The seasonality guide has the full month-by-month plan for interior season.
Where you stand compared to other painters
Across the 88,392 painting listings we track, the median has 11 reviews and 46.1% have fewer than ten. Only 34.1% list Saturday hours, and 39.4% list no hours at all.
That matters for deadline customers. Many of them can only meet you on a weekend or in the evening. If your profile shows Saturday hours and your website says "we book interior rooms before the holidays," you look like the painter who can actually get it done. The benchmark report shows the full numbers by state.
What not to do
- Do not discount. A deadline is already a reason to book. A discount just lowers your price on work people were going to buy.
- Do not promise dates you cannot hit. One missed holiday deadline turns into a review you do not want.
- Do not wait for the phone. The homeowners with a deadline are making their decision now.
The short version
For the next 30 days, tell everyone you have dates before the holidays, quote fast with photos and room ranges, fill open days on purpose, and line up January work before you leave each job.
